Houston Sjögren’s Syndrome Treatment

What is Sjögren’s Syndrome?

Sjögren’s Syndrome is a disease in which the immune system attacks the body’s moisture-producing glands, such as tear ducts, or the saliva glands. Once affected, the glands may become scarred or injured and intense dryness in the areas may result. The disease may also cause exhaustion, soreness in the joints, and in rare cases may also affect the lungs, kidneys or nerves.

Sjögren’s Syndrome is an autoimmune disorder, meaning the patient’s immune system attacks its own tissue as if it were foreign matter. The exact cause of this illness is unidentified, but is speculated to be caused by genetics or environmental factors.

The most frequent symptoms of Sjögren’s syndrome are extremely dry eyes or mouth that has persisted for three or more months and are not influenced by medication. The patient may experience itching or burning near or inside of the eyes, and the mouth may feel as if it is stuffed with cotton.

This autoimmune disease may develop in people who also have rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or scleroderma. If this is the case, then it is classified as secondary Sjögren’s Syndrome.

To establish whether or not Sjögren’s Syndrome is present, your doctor will conduct a physical assessment, paying special attention to symptoms such as dry eyes or mouth. Your doctor may also inquire about any medicines you may be taking (such as antihistamines) or antidepressants that may be causing the dry eyes or mouth.

How is Sjögren’s Syndrome Treated?

There is currently no cure for Sjögren’s Syndrome, but your doctor can work with you to treat any symptoms you may have. Some recommended treatments are synthetic tears to moisten your eyes, and mouth lubricants or saliva substitutes to moisten your mouth and throat.
