Houston Psoriatic Arthritis Treatment

Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory arthritis seen in patients who have psoriasis, a condition of the skin. The origin of this type of arthritis remains unidentified, but it is generally linked with genetics. This type of arthritis occurs in a small number of patients who have psoriasis and is higher in those whose family has a history of psoriatic arthritis. The age of patients most often ranges from 30 to 60 years old and can equally occur in men and women.

There are five general variants of this type of arthritis:

• Variant 1 — The most common form, causing an asymmetric inflammatory arthritis and affecting both small and large joints. Inflammation of the fingers and toes are usually an indication of this variant.
• Variant 2 — Affects the last row of finger (DIP) joints and pitting of the nails is usually seen.
• Variant 3 — This is comparable to rheumatoid arthritis and is symmetric but patients are often missing the rheumatoid factor in their blood.
• Variant 4 — Spondylitis, or arthritis of the spine, may be the primary feature.
• Variant 5 — The arthritis mutilans form of psoriatic arthritis displays severe joint destruction or deformity primarily in the hands.

How is Psoriatic Arthritis Treated?

The treatment of this type of arthritis is intended to prevent joint damage and help relieve the associated skin condition. Non drug therapies include patient education, joint protection, physical and occupational therapy. Skin disease may respond to ointments, ultraviolet light and certain medications. To treat the arthritis, non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, DMARDS such as methotrexate, and biologics may be used.
